Artist's Statement Mateusz

The origin of my artistic practice lies predominantly in the exploration of photography, as well as the engagement with the use of photo-related and photo-based imaging processes. In my multimedia works, which consciously transcend the boundaries of photography, the focus is on images that have an impact on social discourses, cultural conditions or political realities. Here, a theoretical reflection is particularly important to me in the time of research, artistic process and exhibition planning. Based on my academic background, I bring a media studies perspective with a philosophical focus to my work.

Dealing with those affect-evoking images and their media-specific process of creation includes both the examination of contemporary phenomena and dynamics

in socio-technical networks, such as memes and viral diffusion and the use of new technologies, such as machine learning. In this context,

I do not consider digitalisation to be a parallel structure or a supplement, but rather an integral and influential part of all areas of life. In this frame of mind, however, I question at the same time how technical achievements or mass media filter and change our perception of reality.

Another important aspect of my work is the establishment

of dialogical and collective structures. This includes my collaboration with Hannes Fleckstein as well the cooperation on the joint project memeclassworldwide with Ramona Kortyka, Jennifer Merlyn Scherler, Juan Blanco and Bernhard Garnicnig. Especially the initiation and structuring of memeclassworldwide as an autonomous class for digital practice within the educational institution and the related conception of seminars, lectures and exhibition projects

reflect my understanding of art as action.
